CTL Announces New Teaching Observation Service for Columbia Instructors

by | Jan 17, 2017 | Announcements, For Faculty

Starting this semester, Columbia faculty and other members of the teaching community can request teaching observations from the Center for Teaching and Learning. The CTL pairs instructors with a trained consultant who provide individualized feedback on teaching, following evidence-based principles for effective learning and teaching.

Teaching observations are open to all faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff who facilitate learning in the Columbia University community. To arrange for a teaching observation, please submit the online request form at least two weeks prior to the date when you would like to be observed.

The teaching observation process allows instructors to establish their course and session goals and receive feedback on the extent to which those goals have been achieved. Participants have the option to have their observed session videotaped to facilitate a self-observation process.

Since teaching observations are a popular service performed by a trained CTL consultant, we limit instructors to one observation experience per academic year. Likewise, the scheduling is “first come, first served.” Requests for Spring 2017 teaching observations will close Friday, April 14, 2017.

The CTL will also work with schools, programs, and departments seeking to refine their peer teaching observation practices. Schools, programs, and departments seeking to refine their peer teaching observation practices should write to CTLfaculty@columbia.edu to begin the train-the-trainer process.

The new teaching observation program is one of many free services and online resources now available to the teaching community at Columbia University. Email ColumbiaCTL@columbia.edu to set up a consultation with a trained teaching consultant today, or contact the CTL directly by phone at 212.854.1692.
