Registration Open for Fall 2017 Teaching Orientations

by | Jul 21, 2017

Columbia University Provost John H. Coatsworth and Catherine Ross, Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, invite new faculty to the Center for Teaching and Learning’s teaching orientations for faculty at Columbia.

Columbia’s Center for Teaching and Learning is holding teaching orientation sessions in August and September for faculty and graduate student instructors. All new and junior faculty, teaching fellows, teaching assistants, and graduate students in an instructor role are welcome to attend these orientation sessions.

Teaching Orientations for Faculty

The Columbia University Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) welcomes new faculty! At the start of each semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning provides faculty with an orientation that offers practical, evidence-based strategies faculty can implement on the first day of class, and introduces new faculty to the Columbia teaching culture. You might be brand new to teaching or you might be more “seasoned,” but either way we’ll get you off to a great start.

Faculty can register via the following links:

Morningside Campus
Tuesday, August 29, 2017

Medical Center Campus

During the opening panel, participants will have an opportunity to hear from senior colleagues about what they wish they had known on the first day. They will also have a chance to talk to the learners themselves as Columbia students share their most memorable and engaging experiences. CTL facilitators will lead sessions on high-impact strategies for the first week of class and beyond. At the end of the day, participants are invited to gather with their colleagues for wine, cheese, and peer mentoring.

Teaching Orientations for Graduate Students

The CTL also offers graduate students a set of orientation sessions designed to supplement department-based orientation and training. Topics include tactics to get classes off to a good start, best practices in feedback and grading, introduction to active learning principles and approaches, inventories of teaching policies and resources at Columbia, and guidance for using CourseWorks (Canvas). Teaching orientation is open to all new teaching assistants, teaching fellows, and graduate students in an instructor role.
