by | Feb 14, 2020

The Office of the Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning welcome the Columbia community to Low Library for the Celebration of Teaching and Learning Symposium on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 from 2-6 pm to celebrate the ways that faculty and graduate students are transforming their courses and pedagogies. Why attend? Learn below.

Learn about teaching with technology.

Start thinking about the best way to use technology in your course. This year’s keynote speaker is Michelle D. Miller, author of Minds Online: Teaching Effectively with Technology (Harvard University Press, 2014). Dr. Miller’s keynote, from 2:00-3:45 PM, “Learning at the Intersection of Cognition, Motivation, and Technology: Fulfilling the Promise of Teaching with Technology” will explore how we can leverage cognitive and motivational research to create technology-enhanced learning activities that make the most of how the mind works.

2Join the conversation on teaching and learning.

Join us for a panel conversation from 4:00-5:00 PM with Wing Fu, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Vanessa Guida, Lecturer and Course Co-Director, Undergraduate Writing Program at Columbia College, both recipients of Provost Teaching and Learning Grants, on the impact of redesigning their courses which included flipping lecture materials, including more active learning opportunities during class, and encouraging student reflection

3Get inspired by teaching innovations at Columbia.

Attend a reception and poster exhibition of projects from 5:00-6:00 PM by 30 faculty, graduate students, postdocs and staff on their teaching and curricular innovations. The exhibition will feature collaborative learning activities, flipped and blended classrooms, new models of student assessment, and teaching with technology, and will highlight projects by recipients of the Provost’s Teaching and Learning Grants.
