Call for Applications: Summer Institutes for Columbia Faculty and Graduate Students

This summer, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will offer three intensive institutes for faculty and one institute for graduate students to develop new teaching approaches, applications, and skills with hands-on guidance from CTL staff.

Institutes for faculty: 

Course Redesign Institute
Monday, May 22 – Wednesday, May 24, 2017
Butler Library 212 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Apply by May 5, 2017

Are you preparing to teach a new course? Do you need to revise or refresh your course? The Course Redesign Institute helps faculty focus on designing or redesigning a specific course. All Columbia faculty seeking to design a new course or revise an existing course are eligible. This includes undergraduate-level and graduate-level Columbia courses.

Active Learning Institute: Flipped Classrooms and Beyond
Tuesday, June 6 – Thursday, June 8, 2017
Butler Library 212 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

How can we create courses that improve student engagement and motivation? The Active Learning Institute helps faculty transform their undergraduate and graduate-level courses into an environment for participatory learning. This institute is open to all Columbia faculty interested in increasing active learning and preparing to flip their courses.

CUMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning

The CUMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning is for junior faculty or senior faculty at the Columbia University Medical Center who are taking on a new teaching role. The Institute focuses on exploring effective teaching and learning strategies in health sciences education.

Institute for graduate students: 

Innovative Teaching Summer Institute
Monday, June 12 – Thursday, June 15, 2017
Barnard College Diana Center from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Apply by April 24, 2017

The Innovative Teaching Summer Institute is a four-day series of workshops, discussions, and shared reflections all centered on the use of emerging teaching practices and technologies to support effective teaching. This program is open to all current Columbia University doctoral students. An upcoming teaching appointment is desirable, but not necessary to participate in the Summer Institute.
