CTL Announces Spring 2017 Programs for Columbia Faculty and Instructors

This spring, the Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning is offering a range of programs and services that connect Columbia faculty and instructors to effective teaching approaches, resources, and educational tools and technologies.  Faculty who mentor graduate students are also encouraged to inform their students of the CTL’s programs, fellowships, and other professional development opportunities for graduate student instructors.

Workshops 

CTL workshops offer opportunities for Columbia faculty to explore teaching tools and approaches with the support of CTL staff and colleagues. Workshops are held at Butler Library and CUMC locations.  

Topics covered during 1-to 2-hour workshops include the essentials of teaching and learning; assessing student learning; applying inclusive teaching approaches; using case study method in the classroom; exploring engaged scholarship at Columbia; and using educational technologies to engage students. Many of the CTL programs listed below are specifically designed for faculty. Any Columbia instructor and staff member is welcome to participate if they meet the requirements and space allows.

Essentials of Teaching and Learning

Seminars

This spring, the CTL will offer two seminar programs to engage Columbia instructors in a supportive community of practice through a series of connected modules, workshops, and discussion groups on teaching and learning topics.

The Instructional Practices for Digital Literacy Seminar is a series of workshops and discussion groups for faculty, staff, and graduate students to support development of critical digital literacy as a standard part of teaching digital skills. This seminar program is held in partnership with the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship and the Columbia Libraries Digital Humanities Center. The deadline to apply is January 20, 2017.

Spring 2017 seminar meeting dates are scheduled from 1-3 pm on the following five Fridays in 213 Butler Library: January 27; February 10; March 3; March 31; and April 21.

The second run of the Reflective Teaching Seminar brings together a community of instructors at Columbia University to reflect on teaching experiences and explore pedagogical practices and beliefs in order to improve student learning and their teaching. Faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff who have experience facilitating learning are welcome to apply. The deadline to apply is January 20, 2016.

Spring 2017 seminar meeting dates are scheduled from 3-5 pm on the following five Wednesdays in Butler Library: February 1, February 22, March 1, March 22, and April 5.

Institutes

The CTL offers 1- to 3-day institutes that provide immersive experiences for faculty and instructors to reflect with their peers, experiment with new approaches and tools, and receive support and hands-on guidance from CTL staff. Later this year, the CTL will offer two institutes for faculty: the Course Redesign Institute on May 22-24, 2017, and the Active Learning Institute on June 6-8, 2017.
