Supporting HyFlex/Hybrid Courses: A Resource for Course and Teaching Assistants

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant adjustments and innovations in courses at Columbia. In particular, instructors have needed to deploy a range of educational technology tools to ensure that students can productively learn and engage with their instructors and each other remotely.

This deployment is relatively more complex in courses that combine in-person and remote students. These courses are often labeled “HyFlex”. In some cases, course assistants and teaching assistants are taking on HyFlex support responsibilities and serving as ‘co-pilots’. This resource provides an overview of HyFlex support approaches and resources that is meant to supplement training provided in your departments and schools.

Resource: Hybrid/HyFlex Teaching & Learning

What is HyFlex? How does it work? What are some strategies for getting started? This guide helps instructors answer these questions by providing an overview and practical strategies for setting up HyFlex activities.

(Hybrid) Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute Sessions

Are you teaching a hybrid/HyFlex course in Spring 2021? Enroll in the Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute to access a toolkit to help you plan your seminar, small lecture, or large lecture class.

Once you’ve completed the asynchronous Modules in CourseWorks (approximately 4 hours), including Module 5: Hybrid/HyFlex Essentials, join the CTL and other faculty participants for this 90-minute synchronous session. Join us to connect with colleagues teaching hybrid courses, share ideas and teaching approaches, discuss challenges and solutions in breakouts, engage in Q&A discussion, and plan for your course context.

This session will be held in a Columbia classroom on Morningside campus and will be facilitated using hybrid (HyFlex) methods. Participants can choose between attending via Zoom or in-person. Register through the links below:
