Workshop To Go: Small Changes to Foster Inclusive Teaching

Workshops To Go is an on-demand offering that department chairs and program directors may request for faculty in their departments/programs. With each Workshop To Go offering, faculty will receive tailored resources, strategies, and practices that can help them address common challenges in their classrooms.

One of our most popular Workshops to Go is “Small Changes to Foster Inclusive Teaching.” Inclusive classroom practices can empower students to create deeper, more meaningful learning experiences, but creating an equitable learning environment can be a challenge. This session will outline the importance of inclusive teaching and explore a variety of evidence-based ways that inclusive teaching practices can be implemented. Topics addressed can include constructing a supportive course climate, setting explicit expectations, constructing inclusive course content, and designing all aspects of class for accessibility.

Open Online Course: Inclusive Teaching: Supporting All Students in the College Classroom

In June 2019, the Columbia CTL launched the first ever MOOC (massive open online course) dedicated entirely to the topic of inclusive teaching in higher education. The MOOC, titled Inclusive Teaching: Supporting All Students in the College Classroom, provides practical, accessible, and usable strategies that instructors can implement in their classrooms to create and maintain a supportive learning environment for all students. The self-paced course is open to all. The CTL is offering free verified certificates to all members of the Columbia community. Guide for Inclusive Teaching at Columbia

The Guide for Inclusive Teaching at Columbia offers five inclusive teaching principles derived from research and evidence-based practices. In addition, the guide contains practical, accessible, and usable strategies that instructors can use immediately.

With Learners: Learner-Centered Teaching in the Undergraduate Classroom

Want to engage students more fully in the learning process? And curious about what undergraduate students think about learner-centered teaching? Join us to find out!

The CTL and undergraduate student consultants from Columbia College, General Studies, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have partnered to offer this new “With Learners” session. Hear from the students about their experiences with learner-centered teaching in Columbia classrooms, engage in dialogue with peers and the student consultants, and reflect on your learner-centered practices.

This NEW offering is part of the CTL’s new Students as Pedagogical Partners initiative. This is one of three 90-minute sessions that provide an opportunity to hear from undergraduate students about their experiences as learners, learn about evidence-based practices, and engage in conversations with students about teaching and learning.
