Active Learning Institute

Looking for ways to increase student engagement in your face-to-face or online classroom environments? Our hands-on Active Learning Institute helps faculty sitting at tableColumbia faculty transform their undergraduate and graduate-level courses into environments for participatory learning. Apply by May 11.

During the institute, faculty will participate in a combination of hands-on activities, an instructional technologies lab, discussions, and online exercises to work through the essential components of designing engaging student learning experiences for their own courses. Topics addressed include facilitating individual and collaborative learning activities, planning and creating effective online materials, and fostering and maintaining an inclusive course climate.

Date: Tuesday, June 16 – Thursday, June 18, 2020

CUIMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning 

The CUIMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning two-day intensive devoted to exploring effective teaching and learning strategies in health sciences education. Since its inception in 2007, the CUIMC Summer Institute has grown to become one of CUIMC’s highly-anticipated professional development events. Our facilitators are experienced CUIMC faculty and other faculty developers from the Medical Center.

The CUIMC Summer Institute is designed for junior faculty and senior faculty taking on a new teaching role to develop their skills as educators, learn about interactive teaching techniques, and collaborate with other faculty across the campus. Apply by June 8. 

Date & Time: Thursday, July 9 (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM) – Friday, July 10, 2020 (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
Location: Roy And Diana Vagelos Education Center, 104 Haven Ave.

Designing Interactive Learning Objects Institute

The Designing Interactive Learning Objects Institute is a three-day workshop devoted to exploring the effective design and integration of Interactive Learning objects into active learning environments. The institute will introduce faculty to interactive digital activities that allow students to deeply engage with content, principles of online activity design, and assessment strategies to measure the impact on student learning. Examples of learning objects are quizzes, games, simulations, and interactive graphics and video. Throughout the institute, faculty will focus on mapping activities to specific student learning objectives for a unit in their course. The institute is open to all faculty. Apply by June 29.
