New Instructional Videos: Teaching with CourseWorks Online

How do I build community, support student engagement, and assess student learning in an online context using CourseWorks?

The CTL has developed three new brief instructional videos to provide instructors the tools and strategies to set up a course with clear expectations for students, create opportunities for a variety of assignment engagements, and nurture an environment that encourages a culture of inclusive communication. See the first video below and visit our website for the others.

For a more guided instruction, attend an upcoming Teaching Online with CourseWorks workshop led by CTL staff.

Self-Paced Course: Introduction to CourseWorks

This self-paced course provides an overview of the basic features and functionality of CourseWorks, guides users through setting up their course site, and presents the CourseWorks tools and features that can help provide an enriching learning experience for students.

Self-Paced Course: Assessment and Grading in CourseWorks

This self-paced course provides an advanced take on the assessment and grading tools in CourseWorks, which are introduced in Introduction to CourseWorks (Canvas) Online. Throughout the course, you will learn the what, why, and how of effective assessment and grading practices to support teaching and learning. You will be presented with learner-centered, inclusive, and research-based ways to use the tools within CourseWorks to create, organize, and grade various types of assessments of student learning.

Upcoming Live Online Offerings

Engaging Students in Online Discussions

How do I get students talking online? How can I keep the conversation going between class sessions?

In this workshop, we will address these questions by exploring a three-step process as well as strategies to ensure that students engage in and learn from synchronous and asynchronous discussions, and leave class with clear takeaways. With intentional planning and facilitation, faculty can maximize student learning from online classroom conversations. Register through the date linked below.

DateOctober 6

Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute

Teaching a hybrid or online course this semester? If you haven’t already, be sure to enroll in the Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute to access a toolkit to help you plan your seminar, small lecture, or large lecture class.

Once you’ve completed the asynchronous modules in CourseWorks (approximately 4 hours), join the CTL and other faculty participants for a 90-minute synchronous online session via Zoom. Register for upcoming sessions on the CTL events calendar.

During the session, you will have the opportunity to experience a few of the strategies that are recommended in the CourseWorks modules, share ideas and teaching approaches with colleagues, explore a case study, engage in Q&A discussion, and begin planning for your course context.

Online & Hybrid/HyFlex Teaching Communities

Are you teaching an online or hybrid/hyflex course in Fall 2020? Looking to meet other faculty teaching in similar modalities across campus and share ideas and strategies?

Join the CTL for conversations with colleagues about experiences with online or hybrid/HyFlex teaching. These informal communities are intended to be a space for faculty to come together to brainstorm, share, learn from and support one another through an unprecedented semester. These monthly informal gatherings provide an opportunity to regularly reflect on and refine your current online teaching and learning practices during the course of the semester. Register through the dates linked below.
