The CTL has launched Supporting Hybrid & Online Learning & Teaching (SHOLT), a self-paced CourseWorks course designed to help Columbia graduate student instructors in support roles develop effective teaching practices in online and hybrid courses for Fall 2020 and beyond. SHOLT is an asynchronous resource, with four modules that can be taken at any time. Each module takes approximately one hour.

About SHOLT

This course offers strategies and recommendations for supporting student learning in online courses. It provides familiarity with concepts for effective teaching in this context, and gives access to a wide range of tools and approaches that can be applied to a particular TA assignment – whether you are leading an online discussion section, supporting a large lecture class, or running online office hours.

SHOLT Modules

(1) Teaching Online on a Team
(2) Welcoming Students to Online Learning and Creating Community
(3) Engaging Students in Active and Collaborative Learning Online
(4) Assessing Student Learning Online

Who should enroll in SHOLT?

SHOLT is open to all graduate students who have Teaching Assistant or Teaching Fellow appointments for online or hybrid courses, are otherwise supporting such courses, or are preparing for future online TA assignments.

First-time Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows are welcome to sign up for SHOLT, but we recommend they complete CTL’s on-demand Orientation to Teaching for Graduate Students before doing so.

Graduate student instructors of record should enroll in CTL’s Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute instead of SHOLT.
