Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from the CTL! Join us to get ready for the New Year through offerings listed below.

Teaching Orientation

Are you a graduate student teaching for the first time, or looking for guidance on how to prepare for your first week of classes? If you haven’t done so already, enroll in the Teaching Orientation for Graduate Students to access resources on the following topics:

  • Establishing instructional goals and an inclusive learning climate
  • Overview of TA roles and online teaching support
  • Creating a policy sheet an first day of class plan
  • Common TA challenges and campus resources to help navigate them
  • Next steps for teaching and professional development

Once you’ve completed these modules, we invite you to join the CTL for this 90-minute, synchronous (live) online session on January 8th to debrief big ideas from the Orientation modules, think about the application of these ideas to your specific teaching practice, get feedback about materials you’ve prepared for the first day of classes, and ask burning questions you have about teaching this semester. Completion of the online modules is strongly encouraged prior to joining this session in order to ensure meaningful participation in planned activities.

Date: Friday, January 8
Time: 12:00 PM–1:30 PM

Supporting HyFlex / Hybrid Courses: A Resource for Course and Teaching Assistants

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant adjustments and innovations in courses at Columbia. In particular, instructors have needed to deploy a range of educational technology tools to ensure that students can productively learn and engage with their instructors and each other remotely.

This deployment is relatively more complex in courses that combine in-person and remote students. These courses are often labeled “HyFlex”. If you are assisting an instructor in a HyFlex course, you are an important partner in the exploration of new ways of convening to teach and learn. This new resource provides an overview of HyFlex support approaches and resources that is meant to supplement training provided in your departments and schools.
