Teaching Orientation

If you are a (relatively) new TA, or looking for guidance on how to prepare for your first week of classes, CTL’s Teaching Orientation for Graduate Students modules can help you:

Live session
We also invite you to join us for an 90-minute, live online session on January 8th to review ideas from the modules, think about the application of these ideas to your specific teaching practice, get feedback about materials you’ve prepared for the first day of classes, and ask burning questions you have about teaching this semester.

Supporting Hybrid or Online Learning and Teaching
If you are TA’ing online this semester, sign up for Supporting Hybrid and Online Learning and Teaching (SHOLT). SHOLT is a series of on-demand modules that can help you create an online presence and produce positive, inclusive experiences for students.
Modules cover:
- Teaching online on a team
- Welcoming students to online learning and creating community
- Engaging students in active and collaborative learning online
- Assessing student learning online
Register now and look through modules that are pertinent to your teaching context. And come back during the semester as needed — SHOLT will be there to back you up!
Hybrid & Online Teaching Institute
If you are a Core Preceptor or instructor of record, we invite you to sign up for the Hybrid and Online Teaching Institute. The institute guides faculty and instructors of record through the process of adapting their courses from face-to-face to online or hybrid formats.
The institute consists of asynchronous, on-demand content hosted in CourseWorks followed by a synchronous online experience with CTL staff and other faculty participants over Zoom. Together, these sections provide faculty and instructors of record with a comprehensive toolkit they can apply to their own course context whether this may be a seminar, small lecture, or large lecture class. The total time commitment is under six hours.
Supporting HyFlex / Hybrid Courses: A Resource for Course and Teaching Assistants
This semester many classes at Columbia will be combining in-person and remote students, which offers a number of logistical challenges as well as opportunities for innovation. These courses are often labeled “hybrid” or “HyFlex”. If you are assisting an instructor in a HyFlex course, this online resource is for you. It provides an overview of HyFlex support approaches and tools that is meant to supplement training provided in your departments and schools.
