Teaching Statement Online: Applications Open!

The CTL is pleased to offer a unique, online opportunity for current Columbia doctoral students to learn about, write, and revise a teaching statement in order to enter the academic job market successfully.

The Teaching Statement Online intensive (TSO) is designed to let you work from home or wherever you do your best writing. Working 2-3 hours per week, this four-week program will move participants step-by-step through the writing process. Participants who complete the program will leave with a completed draft of their teaching statement and receive multiple rounds of feedback from CTL Teaching Consultants and peers.

The Teaching Statement Online workshop will next run from April 5 – May 3, 2021. Applications will be accepted from March 22 – March 29.

Lead Teaching Fellowship: Applications Open Soon!

The Lead Teaching Fellowship is a professional development opportunity for doctoral students who are committed to promoting pedagogical practices and conversations among their peers. LTFs must be in years 2-7 of a doctoral program at Columbia University as of Fall 2021. Applications for 2021-22 Lead Teaching Fellows will be accepted starting Monday, March 29.

As a Lead Teaching Fellow, you will:

  • Receive a stipend for designing workshops that respond to teaching-related needs and interests in your department.
  • Connect to resources and programs at the CTL that can help you shape these workshops.
  • Cultivate peer connections within an interdisciplinary cohort of Columbia graduate students committed to advancing teaching practices.

LTFs receive stipends of $2000 ($1000 at the end of each semester) upon the successful production of teaching-related events in their home departments, and the completion of a series of activities promoting communication between the CTL, other Fellows, and faculty and graduate student instructors in their home departments.

LTF Workshop

Events and discussions produced by CTL Lead Teaching Fellows run in dozens of departments across the university each semester. These following upcoming sessions are open to all graduate students.

“Why Bother?” How to Battle Malaise in Ourselves and Our Students

The current reality of declining mental health, uncertain futures, and lost time and space due to the pandemic has greatly impacted motivation and confidence in the value of higher education. It’s easy to wonder why we put so much work into creating a space that students may find to not be worth their time and money. However, part of our responsibility as teachers is to stress the importance of learning for its own sake. Join us for a conversation about this topic, along with pedagogical and philosophical techniques we can develop in order to motivate ourselves and our students. We will discuss the value of exploratory and curious learning that emphasizes growth, flexibility, and applicability of skills over the limited assessments of traditional grading systems.

This event is open to participants from all departments and fields and is led by Emily FitzGerald, Lead Teaching Fellow in the Religion. For more information about this session, email emf2173@columbia.edu.
