CTLgrads Journal Club: Online Teaching
This spring, CTLgrads Journal Club (in partnership with Language Lounge) is diving into literature on teaching from Discipline-Based Education Research (or DBER). In our discussions, we are focusing on how we can draw on peer-reviewed research into our teaching practice. Readings to be discussed this week:
- Poll, K, Widen, J, Weller, S. (2014). Six Instructional Best Practices for Online Engagement and Retention. Journal of Online Education 1(1).
- Wei, C. W., Chen, N. S., and Kinshuk. (2012). “A model for social presence in online classrooms.” Education Technology Research, 60, 529-545.
This session counts as a pedagogy workshop for the Teaching Development Program (TDP).

Microteaching Practice
Want to practice a new in-class activity or just get some more practice before teaching in a classroom? Join peers in a Microteaching Practice session, in which small groups of 3-4 graduate students take turns delivering short samples of instruction to each other, guided by a facilitator. After each teaching sample, your facilitator and peers offer structured feedback to support your teaching. All graduate students looking to practice online teaching are welcome to attend this session.
