Online Workshop: The Teaching Statement and Teaching Portfolio

Are you a graduate student entering the Academic Job Market? Wondering what materials to gather and how to get started? Participants will discuss components intrinsic to most academic job applications and take a deep dive into two of the central materials: the teaching portfolio and the teaching statement.

By the end of the session, participants will come away with a clear understanding of the content and purpose of the teaching portfolio and teaching statement and how to get started on them. During the session CTL staff will provide a hands-on opportunity to gather ideas, activities to kick-start the writing process, and samples to help participants hone their writing and make their materials more effective. Register through the links below.

Dates and Times:
Tuesday, September 22; 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Friday, September 25; 12:00 PM-2:00 PM

TAing online? Build up your skills this semester!

The CTL has launched Supporting Hybrid & Online Learning & Teaching (SHOLT), a self-paced CourseWorks course designed to help Columbia graduate student TAs and other instructors in support roles develop effective teaching practices in online and hybrid courses for Fall 2020 and beyond. SHOLT is an asynchronous resource, with four modules that can be taken at any time. Each module takes approximately one hour.

This course offers strategies and recommendations for supporting student learning in online courses. It provides familiarity with concepts for effective teaching in this context, and gives access to a wide range of tools and approaches that can be applied to particular TA assignments, such as leading an online discussion section, supporting a large lecture class, or running online office hours.

Online Office Hours

We invite any Columbia graduate student with questions about teaching online or in-person to join us for office hours via Zoom, no appointment necessary. We also welcome questions about CTL fellowships, programs, services, job market preparation, and making progress in the Teaching Development Program.

Dates: Every Friday
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
