New Opportunities

Technology & Design Fellows

The CTL is currently accepting applications for Technology & Design Fellows: Columbia University doctoral students who will work closely with the CTL to improve the use of technology in learning. In Spring 2020, these new fellows will be focusing on Mediathread, a web-based community platform that supports multimedia analysis in many courses at Columbia and beyond.

This paid opportunity is ideal for current Columbia doctoral students who are interested in user experience and information design, media analysis, and/or educational technology. Applications for Spring 2020 Technology & Design Fellows are due by November 1, 2019

Teaching Conference Support

Current Columbia doctoral students are invited to apply for funds to help defray travel and other expenses associated with attending a conference or training focused on teaching practices in higher education.

Approved applicants will receive up to $750 for attending or $1000 for presenting at a conference or training that helps them develop as instructors or explore discipline-based educational research (DBER). This support is available for conferences attended through May 31, 2020. CTL is vetting and approving applications on a rolling basis.

Upcoming Events

Teachers’ Lounge: Banning, Allowing, and Needing Devices in the Classroom

Teachers’ Lounges are a series of informal discussions for graduate students about teaching practices and the culture of learning at Columbia. Teachers’ Lounges this year will consist of a series of conversations about what it means to make teaching and learning more accessible within a class.

In an effort to focus attention on learning, some instructors forbid or strongly discourage the use of electronic devices during class. Is this an effective practice? This session will look at some research on this topic, consider when devices may be desirable and even necessary for some or all students, and discuss policies in this area that we have tried or admired. Lunch will be available to registered participants

Date: Wednesday, November 6
Time: 12:10 PM – 1:25 PM
Location: 212 Butler Library
