New Initiative for Columbia Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors: Students as Pedagogical Partners

Students as Pedagogical Partners logo

The CTL has launched Students as Pedagogical Partners (SAPP), its first initiative to be co-facilitated by undergraduate students, presenting an unprecedented opportunity to bring together instructors and students to work together towards transforming teaching and learning at Columbia. Including the learner perspective, their insights, and experiences, into discussions on pedagogy provides a unique opportunity for faculty to reflect on their teaching with learners in mind.

“Classrooms are really powerful sites for inclusion and transformation. I am excited to participate in SAPP because I want to support the people on our campus who take on the important work of advocating — from professors to grad students — and help them create inclusive and fulfilling learning experiences for their students and themselves.”

Call for Applications for 2020-21 Lead Teaching Fellows

The Lead Teaching Fellow (LTF) program is a professional development opportunity for doctoral students who are committed to promoting pedagogical practices and conversations among peers. LTFs participate in a series of meetings at the CTL, organize teaching-related workshops in their home departments, and act as liaisons between their peers and the CTL. Applications for 2020-21 Lead Teaching Fellowships are being accepted through March 23, 2020.

Graduate Student Spotlight: Miguel Ángel Garrido Miguel Garrido

“Collaborating with my LTF peers, Senior Lead Teaching Fellow (program mentor), and people in the CTL broadened my grasp about education across fields, helped me understand better the issues within my department, and provided creative solutions that sometimes are difficult to learn about if we do not leave our own disciplinary bubbles.”

In this spotlight story, Miguel Ángel Garrido, a doctoral student in Statistics and Lead Teaching Fellow (LTF) at the CTL, shares how his approach to teaching has changed as a result of attending CTL workshops, facilitating conversations about teaching with peers and colleagues in his department, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary cohort of Lead Teaching Fellows.
