Metacognition as a Tool for Equity in the Classroom

by | Oct 29, 2018

Metacognition is the CTL’s theme for this academic year. Come join us for this workshop that explores what equity is and how equipping your students with metacognitive skills can help them maximize their learning.

Metacognition as a Tool for Equity in the Classroom

Metacognition, sometimes referred to as “learning to learn,” is a powerful tool for building an equitable learning environment whether online or in-person. Examining key research in cognitive development theory, participants will learn how to intentionally use metacognitive strategies that help build students’ awareness of themselves as learners. We will consider ways to incorporate metacognitive strategies into our teaching practices to equip students with the skills they need to maximize their learning.

This workshop is open to all instructors.

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Define metacognition and explain its role in student learning.
  • Explain how building students’ metacognitive awareness contributes to an equitable learning environment.
  • Develop a plan to use assessments and reflection to promote students’ metacognitive growth.
