Faculty Spotlight: Angelina Craig-Flórez
“Our challenge was that we were using the same textbook that we had been using since Elementary I and it was insufficient for the type of preparation students needed at this level…I saw the course redesign as an opportunity to substitute the textbook with authentic materials to ease students’ transition into the advanced level and to teach students how to develop life-long learning skills to keep practicing the language outside the classroom.”
In our latest faculty spotlight, Angelina Craig-Flórez, a Senior Lecturer in the department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures (LAIC) at Columbia University, shares her experience working with the CTL to redesign her course Spanish Intermediate II. In the redesign, Professor Craig-Flórez substituted a commonly used textbook with a new website of authentic materials including news articles, podcasts, films, literary pieces and documentaries to enhance student learning.

CTL Teaching Observations are confidential and provide you with individualized feedback on your teaching, following evidence-based principles for effective teaching, learning, and inclusive engagement. To arrange for a teaching observation, please submit the online request form at least two weeks prior to the date when you like to be observed.

Watch a short video of Caroline Marvin, Director of Academic Affairs, Department of Psychology, using Poll Everywhere, an Audience Response System, in her introductory neuroscience course to encourage discussion and engage students.
Audience Response Systems (ARS) are synchronous, web-based technologies that provide instructors with efficient ways to pose a question or a series of questions and collect digital responses from every student in the classroom in real time. The CTL offers consultations for instructors learning how to integrate Poll Everywhere, Columbia’s licensed ARS, into their teaching practice.
