Workshops To Go
Workshops To Go is an on-demand offering for departments or programs that wish to host a short pedagogical workshop for their faculty. All workshops present evidence-based practices and are grounded in the science of teaching and learning. With each Workshop To Go offering, you will receive tailored resources, strategies, and practices that can help you address common challenges in your classrooms. Department chairs and program directors may select a session topic from the list below, which can be offered in a 30-, 60-, or 90-minute format, or can choose to work with CTL staff to customize a workshop to meet the needs of the department’s faculty.

Consultations
Are you looking for feedback on teaching materials, course design, or educational grants? General teaching consultations offer you support with a CTL consultant who will review your materials and offer personalized, individualized feedback based on your goals. CTL consultants can offer support on a number of teaching-related topics, including:
- Course and curriculum design (e.g., syllabi review, active learning strategies, assignment design)
- Inclusive teaching strategies (e.g., establishing positive course climate, accessibility, setting clear course policies and expectations)
- Professional documents (i.e., teaching statements, diversity statements)
- Educational grants (e.g., Provost’s Office teaching and learning grants, NSF CAREER grants)
- Assessment and evaluation (e.g., development of rubrics, implementing strategies to assess student learning, assessing curricular innovations)

Additions to the CTL
John Foo is the Assistant Director of Faculty Programs and Services for Science and Engineering at the CTL. John develops and facilitates programming and services for faculty, postdoctoral, adjunct, and other instructors. John is committed to enhancing STEM education and making it more equitable for and accessible to Columbia’s diverse student population.
Michael Tarnow is a Learning Designer at the CTL who works closely with STEM-related faculty programs and services at Columbia University. Michael is committed to making STEM education more accessible to students and to promoting collaboration and hands-on learning through the use of educational technology.

Teaching Orientation for New Faculty
At the start of each semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning provides faculty with an orientation that offers practical, evidence-based strategies faculty can implement on the first day of class, and introduces new faculty to the Columbia teaching culture. You might be brand-new to teaching or you might be more seasoned, but either way we’ll get you off to a great start. Register here.

Course Management: Introduction to CourseWorks (Canvas)
This workshop provides an overview of the basic features and functionality of a course management system that allows instructors to build and support engaging courses. During the workshop, instructors learn how to migrate their content from CourseWorks (Sakai), navigate Canvas, manage syllabus and course materials, use quizzing tools, and utilize communication features in the system.
