Managing Classroom Climate: Implicit Bias and Microaggressions

This workshop will familiarize faculty with the concepts of implicit bias and microaggressions, how they occur in the classroom, and the impact they have on students and faculty. Faculty will discuss and apply practical strategies to address microaggressions and implicit bias when they occur in the classroom, whether committed by or against a student or faculty member. Moderate level session; some familiarity with inclusive teaching concepts recommended.

Hybrid Learning Award Proposal Tune-Ups

Faculty can apply for funding from the Provost’s Request for Proposals to explore new educational methods and technologies at the classroom, department, program, or school level. Faculty from all disciplines who are interested in applying for the Hybrid Learning Course Redesign and Delivery Grants or Start Small! MiniGrants are invited to attend this hands-on session to build the assessment portion of their proposals. This session is strongly encouraged for faculty applying for Hybrid Learning Grants for the first time or re-submitting proposals not funded in previous years. Participants will explore strategies for assessing student learning and receive feedback on their choices.

Digital Literacy in Context: Negotiating Systemic Bias in Teaching

In this community conversation, open to all Columbia faculty and students, we’ll hear lightning talks from three faculty members working on different areas of systemic bias that affect how we access and process information and then invite all in attendance to engage in a larger question and response session. This session is jointly sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, Columbia Libraries, and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism.

Course Management: Introduction to CourseWorks (Canvas)

This workshop provides an overview of the basic features and functionality of a course management system that allows instructors to build and support engaging courses. During the workshop, instructors learn how to migrate their content from CourseWorks (Sakai), navigate Canvas, manage syllabus and course materials, use quizzing tools, and utilize communication features in the system. The CTL also offers a self-paced, online training course as a flexible alternative to the face-to-face workshops.
