by | Sep 24, 2018

Looking for ways to make your lectures more engaging and maximize student learning? Join us for a workshop at Morningside or CUIMC on how to effectively design and deliver them. Also, final opportunity to explore metacognition with our Faculty Reading Group.

Featured Workshops

Engaged Lecturing: From Design to Delivery

While lecture is a common teaching method used across disciplines, it can be challenging to design and deliver them in ways that simultaneously engage students and help them learn important course content. In this session, faculty and instructors will explore the elements of an effectively designed and delivered lecture and leave with strategies to maximize their students’ learning. Faculty will reflect on their own lecturing practices and develop a plan for increasing student engagement.

Discussion-into-Practice: Student Learning and Metacognition Faculty Reading Group

This is the last week of our Faculty Reading Group. For two weeks, participants have dived into the literature and explored metacognition, the practice of examining how we learn, by discussing an article or book chapter. In our final session, participants will consider how the research informs our practices, reflect on our teaching, and share strategies. Lunch will be served!

Our last reading is as follows:
– September 27: Dunlosky, J.; Rawson, K.A.; Marsh, E.J. … (2013). Improving Students’ Learning with Effective Learning Techniques: Promising Directions From Cognitive and Educational Psychology. Psychological Science in the Public Interest. Access the reading here.

Upcoming Events

Teachers’ Lounge

Join us for Teachers’ Lounge, a series of informal discussions for faculty and graduate students about teaching practices and the culture of learning at Columbia. This year, Teachers’ Lounge will host a series of conversations around the benefits of helping students assess and monitor their own learning, a process known as metacognition. In the first session, we will examine the ways in which the multiple identities students bring to the classroom impact their ability to assess and monitor their own learning processes. We will ask how instructors can assess students’ prior knowledge (including attitudes and behaviors), include all students in the learning process, and help students self-assess their learning. More information here.

Date: Wednesday, September 26
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Location: Butler Library Room 212

Book Discussion Group for Faculty (CUIMC): “Teach Students How to Learn”

Join us to discuss the book Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate Into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation (McGuire, 2015). During our conversations, we will reflect on current practices to support learning, and how we might integrate practical strategies from the book to boost motivation and learning in their courses. More information here.

Date: Mondays, October 1, 15, 29
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Location: Hospitality Room, 4th Floor (Armory Track and Field Center)
