This Week for Grad Students: October 8, 2018

by | Oct 8, 2018

Are you looking for quick, anonymous feedback on your teaching from your students? The CTL offers graduate students Mid-Course Reviews (MCRs) with trained peer consultants.

Mid-Course Reviews

The CTL offers Mid-Course Reviews (MCRs) with trained peer consultants who talk directly to your students about what they find to be the most helpful and the most challenging aspects of your course, and then report back to you. CTL Mid-Course Reviews are confidential, formative, and designed to support you in your teaching practices.

Fall 2018 Mid-Course Reviews are currently open and will close on Friday, November 16, 2018. To arrange for a mid-course review, please submit the online request form at least two weeks prior to the date when you would like the MCR to be conducted.

What to Expect:

A trained Teaching Consultant from the CTL conducts the MCR with students during the last 15-20 minutes of the class, while the instructor is out of the room. The Teaching Consultant acts as a facilitator, asking students to actively discuss their experience as learners in the class. After the consultant’s conversation with students, the instructor and consultant meet to discuss the students’ feedback and ways to address high-priority issues and implement student suggestions, allowing the instructor to make changes, if necessary, before the course ends.

Upcoming Events

Language Lounge: Knowing What You Know

This session will focus on you, the instructor, in two ways. First, we’ll explore what opportunities you give your students to check in on their own progress and explore how helping your students recognize what they know (and what they don’t know) can help you as an instructor. Second, we’ll reflect on the strategies you use to identify gaps in your knowledge and think about how we might share those strategies with students. Lunch provided to registered participants! Register.

Date: Wednesday, October 10
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Location: Butler Library Room 212

Microteaching Practice

Want to practice a new in-class activity or just get some more practice before teaching in a classroom? Join peers in a Microteaching Practice session where you will divide into groups of 3-4 with a facilitator and take turns delivering short samples of instruction to each other. After each teaching sample, your facilitator and your peers will offer structured feedback to support your teaching. Whether you are currently teaching at Columbia or not, all graduate students looking to practice teaching are welcome to attend this Microteaching Practice session. Register.

Date: Friday, October 19
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Location: Butler Library Room 204
