Advanced Topics in Teaching (ATT) workshops are interdisciplinary opportunities that will help you acquire new pedagogical frameworks and innovate your teaching practices. Topics will vary from semester to semester and cover a range of approaches and theories about teaching and learning. Learn more.

Illuminating Learning Processes

Helping your students consider and adapt their learning processes is an essential part of helping them build expertise. In this workshop, we will discuss specific approaches that you can use to help scaffold these learning processes for your students and help develop important metacognitive abilities while learning discipline-specific skills.

Teaching through Discussion

Instructors often rely on discussions to gauge students’ understanding, curiosities, and challenges in the classroom. This workshop will explore how to teach through discussion by focusing on the following questions: How can we prioritize goals for a discussion? How can we make our expectations transparent to students and prepare them for discussion? And how can we assess whether or not our goals for discussion were met?

Teachers’ Lounge 

Join us to Teachers’ Lounge, a series of informal discussions for faculty and graduate students about teaching practices and the culture of learning at Columbia. This year, Teachers’ Lounge will host a series of conversations around the benefits of helping students assess and monitor their own learning, a process known as metacognition. In the first session, we will examine the ways in which the multiple identities students bring to the classroom impact their ability to assess and monitor their own learning processes. We will ask how instructors can assess students’ prior knowledge (including attitudes and behaviors), include all students in the learning process, and help students self-assess their learning. Register.

CTLgrads Learning Community: Peer-to-Peer Learning

Research has shown that student attention spans are limited: after 10 or 15 minutes of lecture even the most engaged students’ attention will drift off. By incorporating peer-to-peer interaction into our teaching, we can improve engagement and optimize learning. This session takes a deep dive into peer review. Examining various implementation and assessment strategies, we will focus on how to curate a peer review process that is constructive, effective, and forges a stronger community. Lunch provided to registered participants! Register.
