Teaching Statement Online | July 30

by | Jul 16, 2018

The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to offer a new, online opportunity for current Columbia University doctoral students to learn about, write, and revise a teaching statement in order to enter the academic job market successfully.

The Teaching Statement Online workshop (TSO) is designed to let you work from home or wherever you do your best writing. Working 2-3 hours per week, this four-week program will move participants step-by-step through the writing process. Participants who complete the program will leave with a completed draft of their teaching statement and receive multiple rounds of feedback from CTL staff and their peers.

What happens in TSO?

The Teaching Statement Online workshop will provide practical tools for doctoral students at Columbia University to reflect on their teaching and present their practice–and its impact on students–in a reflective and intentional way. This workshop will engage participants in collaborative analysis of sample teaching statements as well as the review of your peers’ statements. As a result, participants will leave the workshop prepared to self-assess their own writing and to continue revising their teaching statements after the workshop ends.

Each week, participants will complete a new module. The program starts by defining what the teaching statement is and generating ideas for how to write the statement. Later, participants analyze excerpts from successful examples before drafting their teaching statements. Throughout the workshop, participants will receive individualized feedback from CTL staff.

Participants who complete all four weeks of activities will leave with a completed draft of their teaching statement and detailed feedback from CTL staff and peers.

The TSO program is facilitated by the CTL’s Graduate Student Programs and Services team.
