Course Management: Introduction to CourseWorks (Canvas)
January 22, 31 and February 8, 15, 21 from 12:00 PM–1:30 PM
Butler Library 204 | Register for upcoming events

This workshop provides an overview of the basic features and functionality of a course management system that allows instructors to build and support engaging courses. During the workshop, instructors learn how to migrate their content from CourseWorks (Sakai), navigate Canvas, manage syllabus and course materials, use quizzing tools, and utilize communication features in the system. The CTL also offers a self-paced, online training course as a flexible alternative to the face-to-face workshops. Visit the CTL website for additional information and resources for getting started with CourseWorks (Canvas).

Pedagogical Strategy + Student Motivation = Empowered Learning
Morningside: Thursday, February 1 from 12:00 PM–1:30 PM | Register
CUMC: Thursday, February 8 from 12:00 PM–1:30 PM | Register

Students today represent a diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and cultures that can amplify, negate, or complicate learning (Ginsberg & Wlodkowski, 2009). Attending to motivation is the key to both teaching inclusively and leveraging students’ commitments to deep learning. Using the model of motivation presented in How Learning Works (Ambrose et al., 2010), this session for faculty examines how three levers (value, efficacy expectancies, and a supportive environment) can work to move students from their surface-dwelling learning tactics to deep engagement in the classroom.

Inclusive Teaching: Small Changes to Maximize Equity in the Classroom
Morningside: Tuesday, February 6 from 12:00 PM–1:00 PM | Register
CUMC: Tuesday, February 13 from 12:00 PM–1:00 PM | Register

Looking to create a more equitable space to empower student learning, but unsure if you have the time or resources to dedicate to overhauling your class? Start small by learning inclusive teaching strategies you can implement immediately (e.g., how to foster productive student-student interactions, set discussion guidelines, collect feedback on course climate). This workshop for faculty is an introductory-level session; no prior knowledge required.

Designed for Graduate Students

Consultations
Sign up for a teaching consultation to receive individualized advice on your teaching, integrating your teaching and research, or developing teaching materials for the job market. In addition to individual appointments in our Butler Library offices, this year the CTL is offering drop-in office hours at SEAS. Email CTLgrads@columbia.edu to request a consultation.

Advancing Your Teaching: Visual Thinking Strategies
Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 4:00 PM–5:30 PM
Butler Library 212 | Register

In our classrooms, we often strive to engage students with objects, artworks, manuscripts, or visualized data analyses. Introducing students to these primary sources, however, demands that students practice strategies for careful visual analysis. How then do we build our students’ visual literacy and ensure they take their time when analyzing visual information? This workshop will introduce graduate student participants to the core tenets of Visual Thinking Strategies and participants will leave with concrete ways to use close observation in their classroom to develop habits of close, evidence-based observation of objects.

Graduate students are also welcome to attend this workshop for faculty:
