This workshop will explore new and emerging approaches to STEM and STEAM education, and present possibilities for leveraging NYC’s living systems as a platform for faculty-led research and learner-centered inquiry. Through a series of case studies and interactive activities, participants will consider different models and approaches to project-based learning from makerspaces to studio-based ateliers and interdisciplinary labs. We will look specifically at how artists, designers and scientists approach problem solving to highlight relationships between the creative process and scientific method. By the end of the workshop participants will leave with a better understanding of how to develop engaging action research projects and coursework across STEM disciplines. This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Christopher Kennedy, Visiting Professor in the Department of Art and Design Education, Pratt University.
