STEM Teaching Discussions: Active Learning

October 21, 2016
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

CUMC, 202A Hammer, 701 W. 168th Street, New York, NY 10032

The STEM Teaching Discussions are meetings of Columbia graduate students and post-docs in STEM fields who are interested in evidence based teaching approaches to undergraduate teaching. During our meetings let by the CTL fellow Susie Newcomb, we draw on various resources and online videos to prompt discussion and short activities surrounding the week’s designated topic.

This week we will define and discuss the benefits of active learning, and how it fits into the overall learning cycle. Then, a video outlines two key features of active learning, teamwork and critical thinking, by showcasing several manifestations of active learning.

Any current or future instructor at Columbia is welcome. No registration or preparation necessary — if you are interested in the topic and available, just drop by! Email Susie Newcomb at set2122@columbia.edu for more information. If you are interested, our materials are drawn from an online course offered through the CIRTL network: www.stemteachingcourse.org (course1).
