Teaching Orientation for Faculty
At the start of each semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning provides faculty with an orientation that offers practical, evidence-based strategies faculty can implement on the first day of class, and introduces new faculty to the Columbia teaching culture. You might be brand new to teaching or you might be more “seasoned,” but either way we’ll get you off to a great start.
Spring 2018 Orientation “Refresh”
Thursday, January 11, 2018
Butler Library Room 213
10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Please note that the Spring Orientation Refresh has been canceled. Please contact CTLfaculty@columbia.edu if you would like to schedule a consultation at the start of the semester.
This orientation is open to all faculty. It is especially useful for new or junior faculty.
At the start of the fall semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning provides faculty with an orientation that offers practical, evidence-based strategies faculty can implement on the first day of class and introduces new faculty to the Columbia teaching culture. During the opening panel, participants will have an opportunity to hear from senior colleagues about what they wish they had known on the first day. They will also have a chance to talk to the learners themselves as Columbia students share their most memorable and engaging experiences. CTL facilitators will lead sessions on high-impact strategies for the first week of class and beyond. Topics include:
- Student Engagement: Day One and Beyond
- Teaching and Learning with Canvas
- Tools for Grading and Feedback
Lunch will be provided. At the end of the day, participants are invited to gather with their colleagues for wine, cheese, and peer mentoring.
In Spring 2018 the CTL will offer an orientation “refresh” for faculty to examine learner-centered teaching practices and syllabus design. The orientation experience will end with a lunch where new faculty can ask questions about campus resources, connect with CTL staff for ongoing teaching support, and network with other faculty members. The CTL will also offer participants an optional CourseWorks (Canvas) session at 1:15 pm, immediately following the orientation.
Email ColumbiaCTL@columbia.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
