Ian Althouse is the Senior Assistant Director of Graduate Student Programs and Services at the CTL where he develops and facilitates programming and services for graduate students, postdocs, and other instructors at Columbia. In his work, Ian enjoys exploring educational technologies, online instruction, and peer observation, throughout which Ian emphasizes and promotes the principles and practices of inclusive pedagogies as well as the value of collaborative learning communities and the importance of fostering mentoring relationships with students. At the CTL, Ian has collaboratively developed specialized supports for new preceptors in the Core Curriculum, graduate students in the Teaching Scholars program, and participants in the CTL’s Teaching Observation Fellows program. Prior to joining the CTL at Columbia, Ian was a McDougal Teaching Fellow at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning at Yale University where he designed and implemented diverse workshops on effective and innovative teaching to support graduate students and postdocs in the campus community. Ian also developed a mentorship program for graduate student instructors, training for new instructors, and a public speaking and presentation workshop for which he partnered with a number of departments on campus to deliver tailored presentations. Ian holds a Ph.D. in Spanish with a concentration in contemporary Latin American literature from Yale University and a B.A. in Spanish from Tufts University. His research specializes in representations of queer figures in Latin American novels and the use of bodies as symbols.

Apart from his academic pursuits, Ian enjoys learning other languages, visiting museums, running, and cooking—especially for others.
