Wondering how to foster an inclusive environment in your classroom? In this week’s featured workshop, we explore the impact of implicit bias and microaggressions and discuss practical strategies to address them.

Featured Workshop

Managing Classroom Climate: Responding to Microaggressions

This workshop will familiarize instructors with the concepts of implicit bias and microaggressions, how they occur in the classroom, and the impact they have on students and instructors. Participants will discuss and apply practical strategies to address microaggressions and bias when they occur in the classroom, whether committed by or against a student or instructor. The workshop will conclude by discussing how instructors can foster an inclusive environment, and give them practice responding to microaggressions in the classroom. Moderate level session; some familiarity with inclusive teaching concepts recommended.

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Define and recognize microaggressions and bias.
  • Describe the impact of microaggressions and bias in the classroom.
  • Develop language to respond to incidents that may occur in their classroom.
  • Identify prevention strategies to implement in their own courses.
