This Week for Graduate Students: Upcoming Journal Club and Online Resources
Upcoming Event
CTLgrads Journal Club
This spring, CTLgrads Journal Club (in partnership with Language Lounge) is diving into literature on teaching from Discipline-Based Education Research (or DBER). In our discussions, we are focusing on how we can draw on peer-reviewed research into our teaching practice. On April 22, we will continue our discussion on Online Teaching and Learning, specifically looking at practical methods we might be able to use in our own practice.
Resources we’ll discuss:
- McDaniels, M., et al. (March 2016). Creating dynamic learning communities in synchronous online courses: One approach from the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL). Online Learning, 20(1).
- Rovai, A. P. (2007). Facilitating online discussions effectively. The Internet and Higher Education, 10, 77-88.
This session counts as a pedagogy workshop for the Teaching Development Program (TDP).
Date: Wednesday, April 22
Time: 4:10 PM – 5:25 PM
Location: via Zoom
Support for TAs Teaching Online
The CTL has put together a resource for graduate student Teaching Assistants who are supporting classes that have shifted online. It provides an overview of considerations, approaches, and tools that can help keep you connected to students and their learning. We invite you to look at this resource as well as others available on CTL’s Contingency Planning: Teaching Online portal.
For further guidance, there are several ways for graduate students to reach out: visit Office Hours via Zoom, request a one-on-one consultation, request a teaching observation, or email us at CTLgrads@columbia.edu.
