Nicole (Nicky) is a Senior Learning Designer at the CTL and is particularly passionate about, and committed to, fostering inclusive teaching practices and environments.

Before joining the CTL, Nicky worked at the University of Michigan in a variety of instructional capacities. She taught in the Communication Studies Department, the School of Literature, Science, and the Arts Honors Program, and the Women’s Studies Department, and has particular experience teaching writing-intensive courses. As a graduate student instructional consultant Nicky worked at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching developing and facilitating workshops, practice teaching sessions, student feedback sessions, and conducting teaching observations for graduate students. For several years Nicky also worked in the Academic Success Program at Michigan’s Athletics Department as a tutor and mentor to student athletes, and has worked with faculty on course redesign, curriculum development, and incorporating instructional technologies into the classroom.

Nicky is finishing her PhD in Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. Her dissertation research focuses on television and media industries, particularly issues of digital distribution, cultural geography, and the post-network era. She hopes to see more bridges between research and pedagogy in the discipline of media studies, and the humanities in general. Prior to beginning graduate school Nicky completed a BA in Literary and Cultural Studies, and a BSocSci in Politics and International Relations from Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia where she is from. She volunteered for many years at UN Youth Australia and the Western Australian AIDS Council as a peer educator and facilitator, helping design educational programs and outreach around youth empowerment and safer sex practices. After receiving her teaching accreditation, she worked as a high school teacher in Perth before moving to the US.

In her spare time Nicky enjoys rowing, dancing, and going to the movies. She is an avid hockey fan, and is also doing her best to get to as many restaurants as possible in NYC.
