Global Muckraking MOOC Relaunches April 4
Columbia University’s Global Muckraking: Investigative Journalism and Global Media MOOC (massive open online course), which received worldwide participation during its initial release, will once again be offered on the edX platform on April 4. The course is free and open to all learners.
The five-week MOOC explores investigative and crusading journalism, and is led by Anya Schiffrin, director of the Technology, Media, and Communications specialization at School of International and Public Affairs, and author of the book African Muckraking: 100 Years of African Investigative Journalism. The course highlights the vital role that journalism has played in fighting injustice and wrongdoing over the last 100 years and delves into the current trends reshaping investigative reporting in the digital age.

Participants in the MOOC will learn about how journalists can act as government and corporate watchdogs; the hard and soft pressures on investigative journalism; and trends in media innovation. The course features cases of prominent reporters uncovering injustice from the late 19th century to today.
“Government corruption, corporate misbehavior, state-sanctioned murder. Without the hard work and stubborn persistence of investigative journalists, many of these stories would never come to light,” said Prof. Schiffrin. “In this course, we will examine the big stories and learn about the exciting changes that have transformed journalism.”
Schiffrin is on the advisory board of the Open Society Foundation’s Program on Independent Journalism and edited Global Muckraking: 100 Years of Investigative Reporting from Around the World (New Press 2014). She spent 10 years working overseas as a journalist in Europe and Asia and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
The course will consist of video lectures, online discussions, readings, and assessments. Additionally, eleven interviews with prominent journalists and authors, including Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost and Steve Coll, author and dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, are featured.
