Hybrid Learning and Start Small! Mini Grant Proposals Due April 16

The Hybrid Learning Course Redesign and Delivery grant supports faculty who are developing innovative and technology-rich pedagogy and learning strategies in the classroom. Awardees will receive a grant ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, along with access to resources and support from the CTL for content development, instructional design, media production, software design, and assessment. The new Start Small! Mini-Grants provide support to faculty who are interested in experimenting with one new pedagogical strategy or tool. Awardees will receive in-kind support from the CTL and receive up to $2,000 for a one-semester period.

Coming Up…

Digital Literacy in Context: Negotiating Systemic Bias in Teaching

In this community conversation, open to all Columbia faculty and students, we’ll hear lightning talks from three faculty members working on different areas of systemic bias that affect how we access and process information and then invite all in attendance to engage in a larger question and response session. This session is jointly sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, Columbia Libraries, and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism.

Course Management: Introduction to CourseWorks (Canvas)

This workshop provides an overview of the basic features and functionality of a course management system that allows instructors to build and support engaging courses. During the workshop, instructors learn how to migrate their content from CourseWorks (Sakai), navigate Canvas, manage syllabus and course materials, use quizzing tools, and utilize communication features in the system.

CTL @ CUMC – Managing Classroom Climate: Implicit Bias and Microaggressions

This workshop will familiarize faculty with the concepts of implicit bias and microaggressions, how they occur in the classroom, and the impact they have on students and faculty. Faculty will discuss and apply practical strategies to address microaggressions and implicit bias when they occur in the classroom, whether committed by or against a student or faculty member. Moderate level session; some familiarity with inclusive teaching concepts recommended.
