This Week for Graduate Students: CTL support available to you over the break

by | Dec 13, 2021

As we approach the end of the semester, the CTL would like to thank our community for your tireless work and dedication to improving your teaching and supporting students during these challenging times. Below are updates regarding offerings available over the holiday break.

Office Hours and Consultations

Live Office Hours have ended for the semester, and will resume weekly on Fridays starting January 14 (2–4pm). In the meantime, please request an individual consultation or contact CTLgrads@columbia.edu with any teaching-related questions about professional development, preparing for the job market, teaching in different modalities, and general teaching-related support.

On-Demand Resources to Prepare for Spring

On-demand resources including CTL’s Orientation to Teaching, Essentials of Teaching and Learning modules, and support for job market materials listed below are available online anytime for those wishing to prepare for next year over the break.

Orientation to Teaching
Teaching orientation modules provide useful guidance for establishing an inclusive tone with students, drafting policies, creating plans for initial class sessions, and connecting to student support offices and other campus resources.

Essentials of Teaching and Learning Modules
Modules with guidance and examples on the following foundational topics: Inclusive Teaching, Defining Learning Objectives, Active Learning, and Assessment and Grading.

Intro to the Teaching Portfolio
This module is designed to support you in compiling your teaching portfolio, a set of materials that complements your teaching statement to represent your teaching.

Intro to the Teaching Statement
This self-paced resource introduces you to the teaching statement—one of the most frequently requested teaching materials on the academic job market—and helps kickstart the writing of your first draft.

Into to the Diversity Statement
Diversity statements are often deeply personal and, as a result, can take a lot of time and effort to craft, elaborate, and revise. The CTL has designed this self-paced resource to introduce you to the diversity statement as a genre and help you begin the process of ideating and crafting the first draft of your statement.
