Online Offerings on Course Design to Prepare for Fall 2020

The CTL offers several ways for faculty to approach online, face-to-face and hybrid course design to prepare for the Fall 2020 semester and best support student learning:

Adapting Your Face-to-Face Course to a Fully Online Course: A Guide 

Are you wondering how to effectively move your face-to-face course online? Need strategies for getting started? This guide provides suggestions for adapting the design of a face-to-face course by focusing on online capabilities, considering the intentional integration of technology to support teaching and learning, and emphasizing learner-centered and inclusive practices. 

Course Design Essentials

Are you looking to design a new course or change the design of an existing course (face-to-face, blended, or fully online)? Maximize your summer by enrolling in our online, self-paced Course Design Essentials course (estimated time commitment: 6 hours). Online Teaching at Its Best: Merging Instructional Design with Teaching and Learning Research (2018) by Linda B. Nilson, director emerita of the Office of Teaching Effectiveness Innovation (OTEI) at Clemson University, and Ludwika A. Goodson, associate director of the Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Purdue University Fort Wayne, connects instructional design with teaching and learning research to offer a road map for online instruction. 

Blended Learning Essentials Institute

The Blended Learning Essentials Institute provides an overview of blended learning and guides instructors through a research-based, stepwise design process for a lesson or unit of study. Over the four-day institute, faculty will complete reading, workbook, and discussion activities complemented by live group discussion activities and one-on-one office hours. Throughout the institute and beyond, faculty will have access to CTL staff and a cohort of peers to discuss their work. Columbia faculty are invited to sign up by Monday, June 15, 2020.

CUIMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning

The 2020 CUIMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning is a one-week online workshop devoted to exploring effective teaching and learning strategies in health sciences education. The CUIMC Summer Institute is designed for junior faculty and senior faculty taking on a new teaching role to develop their skills as educators, learn about interactive teaching techniques, and collaborate with other faculty across the campus. Topics covered include: Effective Course Design for Face-to-Face or Online Classrooms, Designing Student-Centered Activities, and Creating Inclusive Learning Environments. CUIMC Faculty are invited to apply by Friday, June 19, 2020.
